THE ALLING CHILDREN by Oliver Tarbell Eddy (American 1799-1868) Metropolitan Museum of Art, N.Y.C..
While little is known about Oliver Tarbell Eddy, he works in the style of Rembrandt Peale. Eddy was an inventor, responsible for an early version of the modern typewriter. He was the son of Isaac Tarbell Eddy, an engraver, and Lucy Tarbell Eddy. Isaac had a printing establishment in Vermont. Eddy completed his earliest known works, engravings, before he was twenty years old. He gained prominence as a portraitist and miniaturist upon moving to New York City, and continued this success when he moved to New Jersey, where he painted the family of William Rankin, a well-known hat manufacturer. He has been referred to as a nomadic painter in that he left New Jersey, in spite of his success and stability there, for Baltimore, where he executed a number of portraits. After Baltimore, he moved on to Philadelphia, where he died. Eddy's technique and style succeeded best for portraits of groups or single figures, with rich detail defining the interior settings, costume and accessories surrounding the subjects.
