Painter Benjamin Herring junior (1830-1871) resided in Tonbridge, England, for most of his life. He worked primarily in the rustic genre, painting animal and sporting scenes. Both the British Institution and the Society of British Artists exhibited his art between 1861 and 1863. Sporting and animal scenes were a family love; father John Frederick Herring senior (1795-1865) and uncle Benjamin Herring senior (1806-1830) were both artists as well. Benjamin Herring junior and senior are quite often confused, particularly because they share the same birth and death year. Scholars have recently surmised that many of forged J.F. Herring farmyard scenes were in fact done by Benjamin Herring junior.
