SUMMERTIME, GLOUCESTERSHIRE by James Archer (Scotland 1834-1904)
Scottish painter of genre, portraits, landscapes and historical scenes (mostly medieval). Studied at the Trustee's Academy in Edinburgh under Sir William Allan. At first painted chalk portraits, but in 1849 he exhibited his first historical picture 'The Last Supper' at the RSA. Elected ARSA 1850, RSA 1855. Exhibited at the Royal Academy 1840-1904 (108 works), British Institution and Society of British Artists. About 1859 he began to paint a series of Arthurian subjects, e.g. 'La Morte d'Arthur', 'Sir Lancelot and Queen Guinevere' etc. which show Pre-Raphaelite influence. In 1862 he settled in London, and turned mainly to sentimental historical scenes and portraits. He was the first Victorian painter to do children's portraits in period
