STUMP SPEAKING by George C Bingham (American 1811-1879)
George Bingham was one of the greatest American painters of genre scenes. He was born in Augusta County, Virginia, but lived mainly in Missouri and that area was the subject of all his major works. Bingham was essentially self-taught but briefly attended PAFA in 1838. Prior to that he worked as a portraitist, created simplified and linear paintings that have a strength and an intensity of modeling that make them highly superior to the work of most provincial artists of the time.
After a four year period where he painted more sophisticated murals in Washington DC, he began his series of Mid-West scenes for which he his most noted. He depicted scenes of the exotic fur-traders and the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers and painted quiet landscapes and realistic genre paintings. Although he conveyed the lively, homely quality of pioneer life, he was also concerned with carefully controlled composition and the effects of light. His works include the famous Fur Traders Descending the Missouri (1845, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City) and The Jolly Flatboatmen, which has been said that no American artist has created a more conscious geometrical construction of forms.
In the early 1850,s Bingham began doing works dealing with political campaigning and elections. These pictures involved dozens of painstakingly complete and detailed figures. He went to great lengths to distinguish among facial expressions and features. These pieces reflected Bingham's interest in politics and elections (he was elected to the Missouri legislature in 1848) and often revealed a dissatisfaction of the current suffrage policies.
