Image size of print is 14 1/2 x 20 inches with ample margins. THE OVAL FOUNTAIN IN THE GARDENS OF THE VILLA d'ESTE, TIVOLI by Hubert Robert (Fr., 1733-1808) National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
After Hubert Robert overcame his parents' objections to his artistic career, he may have studied drawing with Baroque sculptor Michel-Ange Slodtz, who recommended Robert to Giovanni Paolo Panini, a leading painter of Rome and its ruins. Robert began training with him in Rome, and Panini's influence was profound and lifelong. Robert began painting more or less imaginary representations of antique ruins and fantastic views of urban architecture and became known as "Robert des Ruines." While in Rome, he also went drawing with Jean-Honore Fragonard, whose late Rococo style he shared.
When he returned to France in 1765, Robert's romanticized version of the style of Panini and visionary architect Giovanni Battista Piranesi became immensely popular and he promptly entered the Acadmie Royale. Robert's first exhibit at the Salon of 1767 prompted critic Denis Diderot to write, "The ideas which the ruins awake in me are grand." Later on, Robert became designer of the king's gardens and keeper of Louis XVI's pictures. He also painted rural views and chronicled Parisian life, from fires to festivals to urban renewal projects. After a brief imprisonment during the French Revolution, he became one of the first curators at the Muse du Louvre
