ORCHID PHALEANOPSIS by Mary Kay Krell
Mary Kay Krell's major at the University of Michigan was in painting and printmaking. In a work-study program during her college years, Mary Kay learned graphics skills and has since held several job-related positions as a graphic artist. These jobs, of course, were intermingled with raising a family, moving several times, and dabbling in painting and ink illustration.
Mary Kay began to paint seriously with watercolors after a move to Minnesota in 1985. Since that time, she has developed a representational style of art that is characterized by softness, luminosity, and a meticulous preoccupation with color. Her subject matter is botanical - either nursery and garden scenes, or still life paintings featuring flowers.
She regularly exhibits with watercolor societies, and is a signature member of the Southwestern Watercolor Society as well as the Society of Watercolor Artists of Fort Worth. Recently, she has won Best of Show in the 1997 Southwestern Watercolor Society national exhibition, and the David Christopher Goldsbury Award in the 1998 Texas Watercolor Society national exhibition.
