Tennant received his BFA (magna cum laude) in painting from Syracuse University in 1975. He continued at the university to receive an MS in Art Education in 1976.
Tennant has been showing his highly realistic gouache still lifes in New York for the past 12 years. He was one of the first artists to exhibit at the recently established Bernarducci Meisel Gallery in New York City with a one-man show in November 2000. Tennant has also written a book entitled Realistic Painting, which has sold over 25,000 copies and is published by Walter Foster Publishing of Laguna Hills, California.
Tennant is one of the few artists in the country who works solely in gouache and on a large scale. In competition, Tennant has garnered many "best of show" and "most popular" awards. He has earned two New York State Arts Grants in the past twenty years. Tennant's work has appeared in eight books as well as numerous magazines both in the United States and abroad.
