LOOKING FOR CRUMBS FROM THE RICHMAN'S TABLE by Edwin Landseer (Eng., 1802-1873) Wallace Collection, London.
Probably one of the most famous English painters of animals was Edwin Landseer. Born in London in 1802, he was a child prodigy. At age 13 he exhibited his works at the Royal Academy and at age 24 he was elected to the Royal Academy. He was knighted in 1850, received a gold medal at the Paris Exhibition of 1855, and in 1866 was elected, but declined to accept, the presidency of the Royal Academy.
Landseer became famous for his pictures of horses, dogs and stags. Often his animals have a sentimentality of treatment which captures their noble purpose.
