JAMES FRANCIS SMITH by Isaac Sheffield.
Born in Guilford, Connecticut, little is known about him except that he was an itinerant Connecticut painter who worked in the 1830s and early 1840s. In 1838, he settled in the whaling center of New London. Only five adult portraits including three miniatures are extant, and four of the five are of sea captains holding telescopes with red drapes for background and a ship in the distance. They are half-length, face views, posed stiffly with dark suits and starched white shirts.
