John Ferneley, Sr. (1782-1860) began his artistic career decorating coaches in his native Leicestershire. In 1803, he went to London, and became pupil of the successful equestrian artist Benjamin Marshall. In 1814, he moved to Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, where he lived for the rest of his life painting horse portraits and depicting local gentry enjoying country sports
