IMAGINARY HARBOR VIEW by Michele Felice Corne (c. 1800).

A marine, landscape, portrait, and mural painter, Michele Corne grew up in Naples, Italy, and came to America with a merchant from Salem, Massachusetts named Elias Hasket Derby, Jr. He was active in Salem until 1806 and helped establish the tradition of marine painting in that area.

He then moved to Boston and became noted for his depictions of ships and naval battles of the War of 1812. He also painted numerous murals, and in 1810 did a mural cycle in the newly-built Sullivan-Dorr House. His six-foot panorama, "Attack on Tripoli," was shown at Washington Hall in Salem.

After 1822, he lived in Newport, Rhode Island where he died in 1845
