HARRIET LEAVENS by Ammi Phillips (American, 1788-1865).

Ammi Phillips was a limner, or a self-trained folk artist, who specialized in portraits, he was both prolific and inventive. He lived and worked in the rural border areas and small towns of New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts (along the Hudson River) from 1801-1865. Although lacking professional training, he is considered one of the best American country portrait painters of the nineteenth century. Phillips was born in Colebrook, Connecticut in 1788 and died at Curtisville, Massachusetts in 1865.

Few details are known about Phillips' life, but at the time he painted the San Diego Museum of Art portraits he was charging about $20 a pair.
