Regarded as both a professional and literati painter, T'ang Yin (1470 - 1524) lived and worked in the vicinity of Soochow. A student of Chou Ch'en in his early years, T'ang later studied the styles of both the Southern Sung academy and the Yuan. He combined these influences to form a distinctive personal style. The figures, trees, and plantains depicted in T�ao Ku Presenting a Poem to Ch'in Jo-lan , which we can trace to the later part of T'ang's life, suggest an affinity of spirit with the work of Tu Chin.
