A FIELD TRIAL - ON THE POINT by J H Tracy ( American 1843-1893) Wunderlich & Co. New York City.
A well-known painter of sporting subjects in the latter part of the 19th century, John Tracy was born in Rochester, Ohio, and studied in Chicago with Albert Leighton Rawson before going to Paris in 1867.
He returned to the United States and settled briefly in California and then went to St. Louis where he met with success as a portraitist and painter of cattle, horses, and hunting dogs. He exhibited at the Sketch Club and in 1880-1881, had a joint exhibition with William Marple and Joseph Meeker.
Around 1890, he lived in Greenwich, Connecticut and then moved to New York City.
